NEWTON, Mass. - The Boston College field hockey team spent its off day coaching aspiring high school players, as the program ran a team development clinic at the Newton Sports Complex on Saturday.
"We like to offer these clinics to assist the young players of the future by exposing them to skills, drills and the style of play that they will experience at the collegiate level," Associate Head Coach Chris Clements explained.
Seven squads with players from five states came out to take part in the three-session clinic/play day. Each session included a 30-minute skills clinic with the BC coaching staff and players, as well as a round-robin style tournament. While the preseason camp was created to help the high school athletes prepare for their upcoming season, it has also proved to be quite beneficial for the current Eagles.
"The development of our current players is important, as they learn the skills and intricacies of coaching and officiating through these clinics, as well as being a role model for the young girls who attend the clinic.
"The interaction between current athletes and the clinic participants is always a rewarding and positive one for all involved," Clements said.
BC senior forward Courtney Tavener echoed Clements remarks about the advantages of working at the clinic. Following Saturday's event, the Winchester, Mass. native who has tallied 38 points through three years as an Eagle, spoke about her experience.
"Coaching the clinic is always a great opportunity for us as players to see the game from a different point of view," Tavener said. "Having the ability to coach all different levels is awesome. Coaching makes us better players and most definitely challenges us tactically. It was great to see so many young athletes really enjoy playing."
The Boston College field hockey program runs a variety of clinics that cater to teams, individuals and coaches throughout the year. For more information about all of the Boston College camps and clinics, please visit http://bceagles.cstv.com/camps/bc-camps.html.
