Chestnut Hill, MA - The Boston College duo of Carolyn Swords and Stefanie Murphy continue to make history for the Eagles program. Swords left the BC campus on Wednesday, May 11, to attend the Chicago Sky training camp, while Murphy left on Friday, May 13 for Connecticut to try and make the Suns roster.
Swords and Murphy are the first two players in BC women's basketball from the same graduating class to sign free agent contracts with WNBA teams in the same season. In 2004, Amber Jacobs was drafted by the Minnesota Lynx and Brianne Stepherson, who graduated a year before, signed a free agent contract with Connecticut.
In the 2005 season, Brooke Queenan was drafted by the New York Liberty but no other team member was invited to a WNBA camp.
Swords', who is the second leading scorer at BC and No. 1 rebounder, left on Wednesday and arrived in Chicago on Thursday. The Chicago Sky will not start camp until Sunday, May 15 at Sachs Recreational Center in Deerfield, IL. The final roster cut will take place on June 2.
"I am thrilled for the opportunity to attend training camp in Chicago. It will be exciting to learn from experienced coaches and some of the most talented players in the world,'' said Swords, who was recently named the 2011 Nathaniel J. Hasenfus '22 Eagles of Year at BC. "The chance to continue playing the sport I love is a blessing and I look forward to the experience.''
Murphy, who is the fourth leading scorer and second leading rebounder in program history, left Boston College campus on Friday and will begin training on Monday, May 16 at Connecticut College. The Sun will host the Chinese National Team on Thursday, May 19 in the first exhibition game of the season.
"It is a complete honor to be signed to the Connecticut Sun where I get a chance to play with some amazing athletes and once again stay so close to home,'' said Murphy. "Every little girl growing up playing basketball dreams of one day playing in the WNBA and I'm so excited that I can fulfill my dream! I'm so excited for what is in store for me."
