Cary, N.C. - Valiant efforts in singles play from the Boston College men's tennis team were not enough to upset Georgia Tech during the opening round of the ACC Championship on Thursday afternoon at Cary Tennis Park. The 12th seeded Eagles (7-18, 0-11 ACC) were defeated by fifth-seed Yellow Jackets (18-4, 8-3 ACC), 4-0.
BC fell behind early, 1-0, when it surrendered the doubles point with losses on courts two and three. Junior Alex Skinner and sophomore Michael McGinnis were downed at No. 2 doubles, 8-1, by Guillermo Gomez and Dean O'Brien, before seniors Adam Davison and Erik Kreutzer were topped, 8-5, at No. 3 to halt doubles play.
Skinner was the first to fall in singles play. The Haverville, Mass. native was downed, 6-3, 6-2, by Kevin King at the No. 2 position.
Junior Jonathan Schroeder was then beat, 6-4, 6-2, by O'Brien on court four to put the Eagles' back against the wall.
Boston College brought the remaining singles matches to third sets, but third-year Akash Muppidi suffered a loss at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, ending the opening round before the Eagles could get on the board. The loss concludes the 2010-11 season for BC.
