BOSTON - Junior left wing Danielle Welch tallied two first-period points - one goal and one assist - and freshman Taylor Wasylk tallied a third-period score to propel second-seeded Boston College to its first Women's Hockey East Tournament title with a 3-1 win over fifth-seeded Northeastern on Sunday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.
Senior forward Kelli Stack, who lifted BC past Providence with an overtime goal in Saturday's semifinal and finished the tournament with one goal and three points, captured tournament Most Valuable Player accolades. Stack was joined by defenseman Blake Bolden on the All-Tournament team.
Senior goaltender Molly Schaus stopped 24 shots to earn the victory and set a school record with her 23rd win this season. The Natick, Mass., resident broke her previous mark of 22 wins set in 2008-09.
Casey Pickett put Northeastern on the board first with a goal at the eighth minute of the opening period before Welch's two points put BC on top, 2-1. At 12:13 in the first period, Welch evened the game when she beat Northeastern goaltender Florence Schelling (32 saves) with a nice move to the point and sent a shot through traffic to signal the horn.
In the final minute of the frame, Bolden one-timed a pass from Stack on the power play to give the Eagles the lead, 2-1. Welch was also credited with an assist on Bolden's seventh goal of the year.
BC closed the door when Wasylk found the back of the net on assists from classmate Melissa Bizzari and junior Mary Restuccia.
The win automatically qualifies the Eagles for the NCAA Tournament. BC will learn who it will face in the first round tonight at 6:30 p.m.
