Chestnut Hill, MA - The Boston College women's basketball team has reached the third round of the WNIT Tournament. The Eagles will face a familiar foe in Virginia on Thursday, March 24 in Charlottesville, VA.
The Eagles (20-12) are coming off an 85-59 win over St. Joseph's on Saturday afternoon. Senior Carolyn Swords had 21 point and 16 rebounds. Swords had 15 points in the first half and needed just 13 to surpass the 2,000 point mark. She is now the second player in program history to reach the 2,000 point plateau.
Sophomore Kerri Shields entered the record books as well. She hit eight three's on the way to a career-high 26 points. Shields became only the second BC player in history to hit eight three's in a game. The first was Kindyll Dorsey '06, who accomplished this feat twice - vs. UNH and Ohio State.
Boston College and Virginia played once this season with the Eagles earning an 73-50 victory at the John Paul Jones Arena in February. BC opened up the game on a 20-2 run in the win. Shields had 17 points.
The Eagles do not expect that to happen again. Virginia is coming off two wins in the WNIT. The Cavs defeated Morgan State, 69-56 in the first round and cruised to a 71-49 win over Loyola on Sunday afternoon.
The Cavs are dealing with the recent announcement that legendary coach Debbie Ryan will leave UVA after this season. The Cavaliers are 18-15 this season.
