The Boston College women's basketball team will host the St. Joseph's University from the Atlantic 10 on Saturday, March 19 at 1:30 p.m. The Eagles defeated Yale, 85-61, to advance to the second round, while St. Joe's defeated VCU, 72-66.
This will be the third Atlantic 10 team BC has played this season. The Eagles are 1-1 vs. A-10 teams with a win over UMass and a tough home loss vs. Dayton. BC leads the head-to-head series, 3-1. The last time the two teams met was in the 2006-07 season. BC lost 58-54 at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse, on Dec. 8, 2006. The Eagles was led by Kathrin Ress with 21 points and 13 from Elisabeth Egnell.
Last Time Out
In the first round game of the WNIT, Boston College defeated Yale, 85-61, at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
Jaclyn Thoman finished with 23 points and five boards, while Stefanie Murphy added 18 points and seven boards. Korina Chapman and Katie Zenevitch came off the bench and combined for 13 points and seven boards.
The Eagles shot 70 percent in the first half and finished shooting 60 percent in the game. BC also outrebounded the Bulldogs by 25 boards.
Offensive Minded
The Boston College women's basketball team is averaging a program high 78.6 points per game this season. The Eagles highest scoring season was in 1986-87 when the team averaged 74.1 points per game. The Eagles have scored 80 or more points in 17 games this season. They have reached 90 in four games and 100 once in the overtime victory against Penn State.
BC is one of the top scoring offenses in the country at No. 9. The Eagles are second in the ACC, behind Miami. BC has been ranked in the Top 12 in scoring offense in the country since the start of the season. In Dec., the team was ranked first for three straight weeks.
Helping Hands
The Eagles had 22 assists in the win over Yale. It was the 12th time this season BC notched over 20 assists in a game. Jaclyn Thoman had four assists, while Tiffany Ruffin added five in the win over Yale. Kristen Doherty, who is fourth on the team in assists per game, had three. The Eagles are No. 11 in the country in assists per game. BC has 558 assists. The program record is held by the 2008-09 team which dished out 582 assists in 35 games.
Three for BC
The team has currently hit 203 three-pointers, which is a new program record. The old record was set last season when the Eagles hit 188 three's. BC hit nine three's vs. Virginia on Feb. 20 to break the record. The Eagles are shooting 34.6 percent from the arc this season. Last season, BC shot 33.2 percent from the floor and took 567 from beyond the arc.
This season BC has taken 586 three's, a new program record. BC also leads the ACC in 3-pointers made this season and is third behind FSU and Duke in 3PT field goal percentage. Kerri Shields leads BC with 76 three-pointers made, while shooting 36.2 percent from the arc. She hit six against North Carolina and five vs. Miami and Virginia. She has hit four or more in 10 games this season...Kristen Doherty is second on the team as she has hit 40 three's, while senior Jaclyn Thoman's hit 39, a new single season career-high. Thoman set a personal single game high when she hit five vs. Duke ... Stefanie Murphy has knocked down a career-high 20 three's this season, while freshman Katie Zenevitch has hit 15...Nine of 10 players have made a 3-pointer this season.
Shields Showdown
Sophomore Kerri Shields will have mixed emotions on Saturday vs. St. Joe's. Shields younger sister Erin is a freshman guard on the Hawks team. Their mother Renie, a former Hawks guard, works in the compliance office at St. Joe's. This will be the first meeting between the sisters at any level. Kerri Shields has started every game for BC this season and averages 10.7 points a game. She also leads the team in three-point field goals made and is shooting 90 percent from the free throw line. Shields had five points vs. Yale. Erin Shields is the starting point guard at St. Joe's and was named to the All Atlantic 10 Rookie team. She averages 7.7 points and had 11 points vs. VCU.
Quick Hits
• BC has defeated No. 13 Maryland on the road; Big Ten power Penn State, Big East perennial power Rutgers and America East champs Hartford this season. All four teams will play in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
• Senior Stefanie Murphy had 18 points vs. Yale on Thursday night. Murphy has 1,702 points; good enough for fourth on the all-time scoring list at BC. She passed Kerry Curran '94 who had scored 1,691 points.
• Boston College is shooting 74.9 percent from the free throw line this season. It is the highest percentage the team has shot since the 2006-07 season when the Eagles shot 75.6 percent. The 2002-03 team holds the program record at 77.1 percent.
• Carolyn Swords has played and started in 131 games at BC, another program record.
• Junior walk on Marissa Mello played in her fourth career game vs. Yale.
