Blacksburg, Va. - Senior Caroline King became the third consecutive ACC Indoor 800-meter champion from Boston College, capturing the title in a heated battle to the line over North Carolina's Tasha Stanley with a personal record of 2:06.28 on Saturday at the Rector Field House.
Heading into the day, senior Ian Thomas was only the second Eagle to ever qualify for the final of the men's mile. For his third event in 22 hours, the Medway, Mass. product was positioned in the sixth slot on the starting line. As the championship group went out slow, Thomas wisely avoided being trapped on the inside and perched himself on the shoulders of the lead runners. As the race unfolded and the pace picked up, his move to gain ground was unrewarded and he finished in 10th place with a time of 4:15.10.
Day two of the championship also saw numerous 3,000-meter entrants from Boston College.
The women were led by a fourth place performance by junior Jillian King. The Scotia, N.Y. product sat on the shoulder of the lead runners in third place through the first six laps and jostled for position between third and sixth over the middle portion of the race, as the lead runners began lapping the rest of the field. Heading into the bell lap un-phased, King began to make her move, kicking over the last 100 meters to finish in a personal record time of 9:22.46 - the fifth fastest in school history - and score five points for the Eagles.
Sophomore Jordan Hamm and senior Michael Keebler championed BC on the men's side with a pair of IC4A qualifying standards. Both runners went out smart and executed a well-run race. The field of 50 presented the usual challenges of a crowded track, but Hamm and Keebler were able to target and pick-off other contestants throughout the race, crossing the line in personal record fashion at 8:23.64 and 8:24.41, respectively.
In the final event of the day, the men's 4x400-meter Relay took third out of heat one with a time of 3:20.67. BC ran out of lane four against Duke, Georgia Tech and Miami. Freshman Kellen MacDonald brought the golden baton in on pace with the field - about 51 seconds - passing it off to classmate Joseph Stuart, who busted out his fastest quarter-mile of the year (49.61). With the Canes in pursuit, senior Tyler Archer ran a 50.16 clip and handed the baton over to freshman Jack Hennessy who ran a 49.77 anchor leg to complete the contest.
The final standings saw the women's team in 10th place with 23 points and men's team in 12th with two points.
