Chestnut Hill, MA -
The Boston College women's soccer team had five different scores as the Eagles defeated Marist, 6-1, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in front of 697 fans at the Newton Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
The No. 20 Eagles advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament to play California on Friday, November 18 at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium on the campus of Stanford University. The winner of the BC/California match will play the winner of Stanford/South Carolina on Sunday, November 20 at the same venue.
Boston College got on the board first as Victoria DiMartino scored her fourth goal of the season at the 22nd minute mark.
"I think the first goal is very important. We settled down, it took some pressure off and we got into our rhythm,'' said the junior forward, who now has four goals and five assists for 13 points.
Three minutes later, Kristen Mewis gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Mewis was dropped just outside the box and was awarded a direct kick. The lefty stepped up and ripped a shot into the far post by the Marist goalkeeper Caitlin Landsman.
With just three minutes left in the half, Gibby Wagner broke by two defenders and placed a left-footed shot into the far post from 16 yards out.
BC held a 13-1 edge in shots at the half. The Eagles goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni had one save in the half.
Both teams changed goalkeepers as Jessica Mickelson entered for BC and Andrea Wicks took over for Marist.
Three minutes into the half, Marist pounced on a loose ball in the box and cut the Eagles lead to two goals. Kathryn Hannis headed a bounding ball into the corner for a 3-1 game.
BC responded 10 minutes later when senior Stephanie Wirth slid the ball to the far post to senior Julia Bouchelle. The Eagles midfielder was alone in a one-on-one situation with the Wicks and calmly placed the ball to the left of the keeper for a 4-1 BC lead.
Wagner scored her second goal of the day off a cross from DiMartino at 61:52 in the match. Freshman Stephanie McCaffrey gave the Eagles a 6-1 lead on a beautiful one-on-one move along the end line.
BC had 18 shots in the match, while Marist managed six. The Eagles had seven corner kicks while not letting up one corner to Marist in the game.
