WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 12 Boston College (10-8, 1-4 ACC) field hockey squad fell, 1-0, against No. 19 Wake Forest (9-8, 2-3 ACC) on windy October afternoon in the 2011 regular-season finale for both teams.
With today's decision, the Eagles will head into the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament seeded fifth. The first-round matchups and game times for the ACC Tournament will be released later today.
The Eagles defense turned in an outstanding performance in Saturday afternoon's game. Despite forcing two corners in the first half, Wake Forest was not able to capitalize on the opportunities due to the steadfast BC defense.
In the first half of the outing, the teams were locked in a defensive stalemate, as both teams struggled to create scoring opportunities and neither team was able to evade the other's backfield. BC's defenders snuffed out any Wake Forest chances just as Wake eliminated BC stretches in its offensive zone.
The Eagles earned their first corner and only corner of the game with less than three minutes to play in the first half, but the shot from Moorfield bounced wide and team was not able to convert.
Neither the Eagles nor the Demon Deacons were able to find the back of the cage in the first 35 minutes of play, leading to a 0-0 draw at the half.
Coming out of halftime, the teams continued to battle with both sides looking for a break. With less than 29 minutes left in the game, Wake Forest got one and made the most of the opportunity, scoring the lone goal of the game.
The Demon Deacons were awarded back-to-back corners. On their second chance, Boston College blocked Wake's initial shots, but was unable to clear the ball. Lauren Greenwald got control of the ball and took a quick shot from four yards out to score the lone goal of the game and give the Demon Deacons the 1-0 lead that they would hold onto for the victory.
