W. Tennis Puts in Strong Performance at USTA Invite

The Boston College women's tennis team made a strong showing at the 2011 USTA BJK NTC Women's College Invitational in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., as the Eagles went 14-6 in singles action and 7-3 in doubles play, each pair only dropping their final match.
Freshman Jessica Wacnik took top honors, winning her flight in which she was the top-ranked player. She defeated No. 2 Amber Li, 6-3, 6-4, in the finals after taking down No. 4 Vanessa Petrini, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals. The Orlando Park, Ill., native has yet to drop a set this year. Senior Erina Kikuchi went 3-1 over the weekend, falling in the finals to fourth-ranked Anna Rappoport, who was fresh off the WTA tour, in a hard-fought battle (6-4, 6-7(4), 7-6(4)). The pair also went 3-1 as a doubles team, falling in the flight A finals, 8-6. They defeated the No. 1-ranked team in their flight, 8-4, in the quarterfinals to advance on.
Junior Kelly Barry and Sarah Dalton both went 2-1 over the weekend, falling in the round of 16. Dalton lost to the top-ranked seed Elle Caldwell, 7-5, 6-4. The newcomers paired up for doubles play, going 2-1 and losing in the round of 16, 9-7, to the second-ranked team.
Junior Alex Kelleher also went 2-1 as the second-ranked player in her flight. She fell in the quarterfinals to Jillian Santos, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. Her doubles partner, classmate Olga Khmylev, went 1-2 in singles action as the No. 4 player in her flight. The two were 2-1 as a pair, falling in the semifinals, 8-4, after defeating the No. 2 team, also by a score of 8-4, in the round of 16.

Senior Katarina Gajic traveled to Pacific Palisades, Calif., to compete in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship. She was the first Eagle in many years to earn an automatic bid into the prestigious tournament. She fell in the first round of the main draw to defending national champion Florida's Lauren Embree, 6-0, 6-3. In the consolation round, she lost to Utah's Anastasia Putilina, 6-3, 6-3.
