Women's Tennis Wins Home Opener, 6-1, Over Massachusetts

The Boston College Women's Tennis team won, 6-1, in its home debut over the University of Massachusetts (0-1) on Sunday afternoon in the Flynn Recreation Complex.
The Eagles (1-1) made a strong start in doubles play, taking all three matches to earn the first point of the day. Sophomores Alex Kelleher and Olga Khmylev blanked their opponents, 8-0, on No. 1 doubles and Katharine Attwell and Katarina Gajic won, 8-1, to clinch the doubles point.
Gajic went on to earn the first singles point from the No. 4 spot, defeating the Minutemen's Clara Mathias, 6-2, 6-1. Shortly thereafter, freshman Veronica Corning was the next Eagle to add a point, handling UMass' Candynce Boney a loss, 6-1, at No. 3. The dual match was decided when Kelleher delivered another straight set win, 6-2, 6-2, over Yuliana Motyl on court one.
Two of the remaining matches went to tiebreakers, with BC prevailing in both. Attwell came out on top, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), after battling back from a two game deficit in the second set against Julia Comas and sophomore Ina Kauppila responded to a second set loss with strong serving to win her match, 6-3, 6-0, 10-8.
Boston College will open the ACC season when Maryland comes to town on Friday, Feb. 4. The match will take place at the Weymouth Club in Weymouth, Mass.
