Chestnut Hill, MA - Boston College women's basketball team fell to Dayton, 89-77, at Conte Forum on Monday night. BC dropped to 12-2 on the season, while Dayton improved to 9-5.
BC was led by senior forward Stefanie Murphy with 21 points and 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. Freshman Shayra Brown added 18 points (10-for-11 from the foul line), while Kristen Doherty had nine. Dayton's Justine Raterman had 21 points while Kristin Daugherty added 19 points.
The Eagles were down a season-low 46-29 at the half. BC shot a season-low 28 percent from the field in the first half and 10 percent from the three-point line.
Boston College whittled the Dayton halftime lead from 17 to 11 points at 16:17 on an 8-4 run to start the half. Dayton had four foul shots and no field goals in the first four minutes of play. Jaclyn Thoman cut the lead to nine points on a driving lefty layup at 14:48. Minutes later she would pick up her third foul and was forced to sit. Swords would pick up her fourth foul at 13:57. It was also the Eagles seventh foul of the half.
Dayton extended the lead on foul shots but a rebound and layup by Doherty cut the Flyers lead to 10 points, 49-59, at 10:57. Murphy cut the lead to nine points with 10:13 to play on a foul shot but a three-pointer by Raterman increased the lead to 62-50.
Shields hit a three-point and Murphy's free throw would again chip at the lead. Dayton sealed the win when Raterman and Patrice Lalor hit back-to-back three's to extend the Flyers lead to 13 points with under seven minutes to play.
Boston College shot a season-low 35 percent from the floor and three-point line (12 percent). Dayton shot 47 percent from the floor and 55 percent from the three-point line.
BC senior Carolyn Swords and Thoman were limited due to foul trouble. Swords played only 19 minutes and had a season-low two points and four rebounds. Thoman played 19 minutes and added 12 points, six in the final two minutes of play. She fouled out with a minute to play.
BC will host Harvard on Thursday, January 6 at 7 p.m. at Conte Forum.
