
TENNIS FALLS TO COLUMBIA, 5-2, IN SEASON OPENER

New York, N.Y. - Freshman Jonathan Raude and junior Jonathan Schroeder earned points for the Boston College Men's Tennis team, but the Eagles lost, 5-2, in its 2011 season opener to Columbia in New York on Saturday, Jan. 22.
In doubles, junior Akash Muppidi and sophomore Billy Grokenberger defeated Cyril Bucher and Sho Matsumoto, 8-4, but the Eagles (0-1) surrendered the doubles point following losses by senior Erik Kreutzer and junior Alex Skinner, 8-5, on court one and freshman Michael McGinnis and senior Adam Davison, 8-5, on court three.
To start singles play, the Lions (1-0) jumped out on the Eagle when they won the first set on each court.
A loss by Skinner, 6-3, 6-0, to C. Bucher on the third court and another from McGinnis to Nathaniel Gery, 6-2, 6-2, put BC at a three point disadvantage.
On court five, Raude put Boston College on the board, 3-1, with a defeat Tizian Bucher, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Both Muppidi and Kreutzer were battling on the first and second courts respectively, but Haig Schniederman was able to seal a win over Muppidiin tiebreaker fashion, 7-5, 7-6 (3), to clinch the match for Columbia. Moments later Kreutzer fell to John Yetimoglu, 7-5, 7-5, bringing the score to 5-2.
Following the first set, Schroeder easily handled Rajeev Deb-Sen, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, to give BC another point, 5-2.
The Eagles will resume competition when they travel to New Haven, Conn. to take on Yale on Jan. 29 at 2 p.m.
