Chestnut Hill, MA - Boston College senior Carolyn Swords had 15 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Eagles past NC State, 77-67, in an ACC matchup at Conte Forum on Thursday night. The Eagles improved to 15-4 overall and 2-2 in the ACC, while NC State dropped to 9-9 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Swords led five Eagles in scoring. She shot 7-for-11 from the floor, grabbed seven offensive and 12 defensive rebounds to pass the 1,000 rebound plateau. She also added five assists and two blocks in the win. Senior forward Stefanie Murphy shot 7-for-10 from the floor and finished with 14 points and six boards, while Kerri Shields had 13 points, Kristen Doherty chipped in with 12 points and five boards, and Shayra Brown added 10 points off the bench.
NC State was led by sophomore Marissa Kastanek with 21 points (5 3-pointers) and Amber White added 18.
The Eagles held a 39-30 lead at the half as they shot 45 percent from the floor. The score was tied four times and the lead changed three times in the half. BC took the lead at 15:16 on a jumper by Kristen Doherty. The Eagles extended the lead to 15 points with 2:36 to play in the half went Katie Zenevitch completed a traditional three-point play. NC State cut the lead to nine on a 6-0 run to end the half.
BC lead grew to 11 points on a Murphy jumper at 17:31 in the second half. A three-pointer by Kastanek two minutes later cut the Eagles lead to six points. BC went on an 11-0 run to go up 56-39 on a jumper by Jaclyn Thoman (five assists). With eight minutes to play, Doherty sunk a three, followed by a mid-lane jumper by Shields and BC was up 71-49.
NC State started to chip away at the lead with five minutes to play when Amber White hit a three-pointer. That shot sparked an 11-0 run by the Wolfpack. Doherty hit two free throws to put a stop to the Wolfpack run.
BC shot 45 percent for the game and had 18 assists. NC State was held to 33 percent shooting from the floor.
GAME NOTES
• In 2009-10 the Eagles scored 80 or more points seven times. This season BC has scored 80 or more points 14 times.
• Carolyn Swords was named to the All-Jesuit Team Honor Roll for her play last week. It was the second time she was name to the team this season.
• The Eagles have won the battle of the boards in 15 of 19 games. BC had 42 rebounds, while NC State had 43.
• Swords grabbed a season-high 19 rebounds. She now has 1,118 career rebounds.
• The Eagles had five blocks in the game. It is the eighth time this season BC has had five or more blocks in a game.
• Senior Jaclyn Thoman had five assists and leads the team with 104 on the season.
• The team has gone 14-2 when they have 15 or more team assists in a game.
