The Boston College women's basketball team is coming off it first two-game ACC road trip. The Eagles went 1-1 over the week with a win over No. 13 Maryland and a tough loss to No. 22 Miami.
BC is currently 14-4 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. The Eagles will host NC State (9-8, 1-2) on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. on the Conte Forum parquet. Following Thursday's game vs. NC State, BC will hit the road again and travel to Atlanta to play Georgia Tech on Sunday, Jan. 23.
IN JANUARY
The Eagles are 2-3 in the month of January. BC is averaging 74.2 points per game and shooting 44 percent from the floor.
Senior Stefanie Murphy, a native of Londonderry, NH, has had an outstanding month. She is leading the Eagles in scoring (17.2 ppg.) and rebounding (10.2 rpg.). She is also second on the team in assists and shooting 45 percent from the three-point line this month. Murphy scored 14 of 17 points in the second half in the win over No. 13 Maryland on Jan. 13. In the loss to Miami, she had 10 points and 15 rebounds. It was her 10th double-double of the season, a new career-high.
Senior Carolyn Swords is second on the team in scoring (15.4 ppg.) and rebounding (7.2 rpg.) this month. In the win over No. 13 Maryland, Swords finished with 11 points, eight boards and three blocks. Against Miami, she earned her seventh double-double of the season, and 37 in her career.
OFF THE BENCH
Freshman Korina Chapman and Tiffany Ruffin gave BC significant minutes in both road games last week. Chapman not only provided much needed minutes with Stefanie Murphy in foul trouble against Maryland. A native of Albuqueque, New Mexico also supplied tons of energy and career-highs in points (11) and rebounds (9).
Ruffin, a native of Winnacunnet, NH, played 17 minutes, five down the stretch, and finished with six points against Maryland. She also played 26 minutes and had three points against Miami on Jan. 16.
GAME NOTES
• In 2009-10 the Eagles scored 80 or more points seven times. This season BC has scored 80 or more points 14 times.
• The Miami game was the third time this season that Carolyn Swords and Stefanie Murphy each notched a double-double in the same game
• The Eagles have won the battle of the boards in 15 of 18 games.
• BC is known for distributing the ball. Prior to Sunday's game vs. Miami, BC had notched double-figures in assists in 17 consecutive games. Against Miami, BC was held to eight assists. BC has reached 20 or more assists in nine games this season. The Eagles are averaging 18.9 assists per game.
• Carolyn Swords is averaging 15.7 points per game in the ACC and shooting 77.3 percent from the floor.
• Freshman Kristen Doherty leads the Eagles in steals with 47. It is the most steals in the single season since the 2005-06 season when Aja Parham finished the season with 67 steals.
• Stefanie Murphy is averaging 13.7 points and 11 rebounds in conference action.
• Senior Jaclyn Thoman is leading BC in assists per game (5.4).
