NEW ORLEANS, La. - January 12, 2011
The group was back to work today at our respective worksites, grinding out additional drywalling and mudding to prepare the house for primer and paint. The teams have really gotten a handle on the work and the houses are progressing at a faster rate each day.
We all headed back to the St. Bernard Project office to enjoy lunches and hear from Liz McCartney about her experience in New Orleans and listen to Tina's story, a homeowner who moved back into her home in August after it was completed by the St. Bernard Project. It was amazing to hear her story of moving around with several of her family members, often sharing a small home with up to 15 of her extended family at once. She was very candid in sharing the emotional toll that it took on her and her family, and the greatest feeling that came from moving back into her home with her husband and daughter is that her daughter finally has her childhood back after 5 years of sharing a room with innumerable cousins.
We headed back to our worksites to finish up the workday knowing that a fun night in the French Quarter lay ahead. After a well earned shower and a fresh set of clothes, the group piled into the vans to head to Bourbon St. We enjoyed traditional crab cakes, BBQ shrimp and bread pudding and then took to the Quarter to do some exploring, which included beignets at Café Du Monde. The incredibly cold temperatures (mid 20's) pushed people back to the vans early to head back to the Annunciation Mission to get some much needed rest for our final two days of work.
