Waking shortly after sunrise we were treated to a highly nutritious breakfast of spicy sausage and scrambled eggs, after which we ventured forth into the unknown. After checking in with the St. Bernard Project we were able to see the devastation of Hurricane Katrina first hand and the impact that it had on the surrounding community. After a brief introduction to the members of staff, we were split into two separate groups and sent to two different work sites. The chosen houses were part of the opportunity housing program which aims to give more affordable rental living to those in the community. After Hurricane Katrina, renters weren't given any assistance and as a result rental prices increased 150%. Each group was set with different tasks such as dry walling, taping, and mudding. The leader was impressed with our group's effort and efficiency throughout the day. After all, the previous group of volunteers averaged a whopping 82 years of age. Nearing the end of the work day a fierce mud-slinging competition ensued; Ian emerged as the victor with Dave following closely behind. We came home to a lovely, authentic dinner of rice, gumbo, and corn bread which was ravaged by the BC horde. After dinner, we took a trip to Tulane University to run off our Cajun-style meal. The group workout quickly turned into a pick-up game of football in the dark. It was a great start to the trip and we are all excited for the forth coming days.
