Chestnut Hill, MA - Boston College junior Jillian Mastroianni, sophomore Victoria DiMartino and sophomore Kristen Mewis were named to the watch list for the 2010 Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy Watch List as announced today.
BC is one of four ACC schools represented on the list. The Eagles have three candidates; North Carolina and Florida State have two, while Maryland has one. This is the first time Boston College placed three student-athletes on the watch list.
This is Jill Mastroianni's second season being named to the preseason watch list. In 2009 the Eagles goalkeeper was named to the NSCAA 2009 All-Southeast Region first team. A native of Durham, CT, she was also an All-ACC first team and earned a spot on the ACC Tournament team. Mastroianni was also the 2009 ECAC Defensive Player of the Year.
It is the first time Victoria DiMartino and Kristie Mewis made the Hermann Trophy Watch List. DiMartino's sister Gina DiMartino was a two time honoree of the watch list.
Victoria DiMartino, a native of Massapequa Park, NY, was named the Freshman of the Year by the ACC and Soccer America Magazine in 2009. She finished the season with 14 goals and six assists for 34 points. DiMartino helped BC finish the season with a program best 18 victories, advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and earn a share of the regular season championship in the ACC. She earned first team all conference honors and second team all-American honors from the NSCAA. DiMartino was named a 2009 NSCAA Division 1 All-America second team selection and the ECAC Offensive Player of the Year.
Kristen Mewis, a native of Hanson, MA, demonstrated team play as she graciously stepped in to play three different positions in her first season. Mewis, an ACC All-Freshman team honoree, did manage to score five goals and had six assists for 16 points. She earned spot on the 2009 NSCAA All-Southeast Region first team.
A total of 30 different schools and four countries are represented on the list, including players from the United States, Canada, Germany and Jamaica.
Voting for the MAC Hermann Trophy is conducted in late November, when a field of 15 semifinalists is reduced to three finalists. Those three will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, where a news conference will be held to announce the winner, followed by a banquet to honor the three finalists.
