Ben Smith Earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Accolades

Boston College senior Ben Smith has earned 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 1 At-Large recognition, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The At-Large division of the Academic All-America program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
Smith was named to the All-District 1 second team. Those student-athletes on the All-District 1 first team advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America voting. Smith joins hockey alums Ben Eaves (2001-02; 2002-03), Jeff Giuliano (2001-02) and Peter Harrold (2005-06) as academic All-District 1 At-Large selections.
A 5-foot-11 forward, he registered 37 points - 16 goals and 21 assists - in 42 games as a senior assistant captain this past winter. The team captured the Beanpot, Hockey East and NCAA titles. The Avon, Conn., product, captured the Frozen Four's Most Outstanding Player honor after he tallied four points - three goals and one assist - in victories over Miami (April 8) and Wisconsin (April 10) in Detroit, Mich.
A history major, Smith was named Boston College's male recipient of the 2009-10 Eagle of the Year Award on May 7. He is a four-time recipient of the Athletic Director's Award for Academic Achievement and the school's freshman male scholar-athlete of the year in 2007.
Smith concluded his collegiate career with 122 points - 57 goals and 65 assists - in 165 games, including an amazing 33 points - 16 goals and 17 assists - in 27 postseason games.
