The Boston College lacrosse team entered the 2010 season having lost eight players to graduation from the previous season including its All-ACC goalie, Katie Monaghan and two-time captain Jenna McCabe, who was second on the school's all-time points list when she finished her career.
"Despite losing a strong and talented class to graduation in 2009, I had high hopes and expectations for the 2010 team and truly feel they rose to the challenge," Head Coach Bowen Holden said.
The Eagles started the season by setting a record for the longest win streak by a BC lacrosse team. The team opened with six straight victories, including an important 14-9 win over in-conference foe, Virginia Tech. That win marked the first game between the Eagles and Hokies since 2006 that was not decided by one goal or in overtime.
Although the Eagles managed a 1-4 record in the ACC, and the No. 5 seed in the ACC tournament, the team substantially improved on its in-conference play from previous seasons. When BC first entered the conference for the 2006 season, the team finished the year with a -50 goal differential against its ACC opponents. The team has steadily been able to improve on this number, achieving a -42 in 2007, -33 in 2008 and -27 in 2009. Continuing with the trend, the 2010 squad set a new mark with a -12 goal differential in its five ACC matches this year. Two of those ACC games this year resulted in one-goal losses to then No. 2 ranked Maryland (7-6) and then No. 4 ranked Duke (12-11).
Boston College also finished the season with a +70 in overall goal differential.
In addition, the 2010 squad defeated rival Boston University for the first-time during Coach Holden's five-year tenure and for the first time on the Terriers' home turf. It was only the Eagles' third victory over BU since 1997.
Senior Lauren Costello made the most of her final year with the Eagles by breaking numerous records throughout the season. She finished the season as BC's all-time leader in goals (164) and points (248) and also now holds the team's single-season record for goals (52) and points (91), set in 2010. Costello's 39 assists this season are second on the all-time single-season list and her 84 helpers during her four years rank second on the career list as well.
Costello completed her season as the third highest scorer in the NCAA, notching 52 goals and 39 assists for 91 points in 18 games. She also led the ACC in points per game with 5.06, assists per game with 2.17 and game-winning goals with seven. She was also second in the conference in goals per game with 2.89.
"The 2010 senior class deserves an incredible amount of credit for the leadership they provided, particularly tri-captains, Blair Clancy, Lauren Costello and Peyton Killeen," Holden said. "They set a new standard for leadership, team unity, and success."
Costello earned her first All-ACC selection as a result. She joined junior Kristin Igoe as BC's representatives. This was Igoe's second consecutive selection.
Junior goalie Sheila Serafino stepped in to the spotlight this year by leading the ACC in saves with 125 and also finishing second in saves per game with 6.94. Freshman Brooke Blue finished the season second on the team in scoring by notching 44 goals, 11 assists and 55 points on the year. It was the most points ever scored by an Eagle in her freshman campaign.
Head Coach Bowen Holden's team finished the season with the best record in program history, breaking the all-time wins record with 12 this year. The 2010 squad also earned the program's first-ever national ranking, topping out at 16th in the country.
"I am pleased with how the 2010 season went; however, I know this is just one step in a much larger quest. The 26 student-athletes of 2010 have set us in the right direction, and I am confident that the 2011 team will work even harder to lead this program into the NCAA tournament."
