Chestnut Hill, MA - A historic moment for women's soccer took place this past Sunday in Atlanta, Georgia. The Boston College women's soccer program had two former players - Kia McNeill and Gina DiMartino - on the same field in Women's Professional Soccer Opening weekend.
McNeill, who played at BC from 2004-07, started on defense for the Atlanta Beat. The former BC standout was a member of St. Louis Athletica last season but was traded to Atlanta. McNeill earned the starting spot on defense in Atlanta and played 90 minutes in the 0-0 tie against Philadelphia on Sunday.
DiMartino, who was a preseason Hermann Trophy watch list candidate in 2009, was drafted by the Breakers. A midfielder, DiMartino was let go on the final day of cut downs in the Breakers camp and landed in Philadelphia. DiMartino entered the game on Sunday vs. Atlanta in the 68th minute to mark the first time Boston College had two former players on the field playing professional soccer in the US.
In May, BC defender Kelly Henderson will join DiMartino in Philadelphia. Henderson decided to finish her student teaching and will receive her degree from the Lynch School of Education at Boston College on May 24.
