Kosmas Takes Home Weight Throw Title at Jay Carisella Invitational

The Boston College track and field programs opened the indoor season at the 2010 Jay Carisella Invitational hosted by Northeastern University this past weekend. A young group of Eagles were put to the test for the first time as part of the BC program, but it was a win by senior Matthew Kosmas in the men's weight throw highlighted the day.
Kosmas heaved the 35-lb. weight 17.45m (57-03.00 ft.) - surpassing the 17m mark for just the second time of his career. The new personal record was over a half meter - approximately two feet - further than the rest of the competition.
Fellow senior Justin Vereen also competed in the weight throw, taking 21st with a distance of 12.23m (40-01.50 ft.).
A pair of BC freshmen won their heats in the middle sprints.
In the 400m, Joseph Stuart won heat four in a time of 50.70 to earn a 10th place finish in the final standings. Classmate Jack Hennessy claimed fifth overall in the 500m, after taking the third heat with a 1:05.94.
Also competing in the 500m dash were freshman Kellen MacDonald and junior Brian Smith. Competing with Hennessy, MacDonald turned in a 1:07.13 for 12th overall, while Smith took second in the fourth heat at 1:08.38.
Junior Matthew Adetula led BC's jumpers with an eighth place finish in the long jump on a mark of 6.62m (21-08.75 ft.).
Fellow junior Jonathan Bogosian took tenth in the high jump, elevating himself to 1.93m (6-04.00 ft.), and freshman Connor Downey cleared 1.78m (5-10.00 ft.). Connor produced the Eagles' only mark in the triple jump (11.95m or 39-02.50 ft.) for 15th place.
Boston College will not compete again until taking part in the Dartmouth College Relays in Hanover, N.H. on Jan. 9, 2011.
