Chestnut Hill, MA - The 2010 season for the Boston College soccer team will go down as the most successful in program history. The Eagles, who finished the season at 17-7-1, advanced to the semifinal of the NCAA Tournament (The Final Four). Though BC lost 2-0 to the No. 1 ranked team Stanford, the Eagles were one of four teams still playing soccer in the month of December.
It was the eighth consecutive time Head Coach Alison Foley led her team to the NCAA Tournament. It was the Eagles fourth straight Sweet 16 appearance and second time in the Elite Eight. The Final Four appearance - that was a first as well for the program.
The Eagles, which finished the season with the highest ranking in program history at No. 3, opened the season with a showdown against then No. 1 Stanford. The Eagles tied the Cardinal, 1-1, when Natalie Crutchfield scored in the 63rd minute.
BC then went on a winning streak of nine consecutive games before losing in the month of October 3-2 in overtime against Virginia. The Eagles fell on hard times with numerous injuries and struggled to get their aggressive play back on track. BC proceeded to drop the next two games before pulling out a victory over Clemson at home on October 17. BC went on the road and after losing to Duke, 1-0, it earned a tough 2-1 win over Wake Forest in overtime on Oct. 24.
With a double-overtime win over Miami on October 28, BC would host Florida State in the final regular season game. Though the Eagles fell to the Seminoles, 1-0, the team entered the ACC Tournament with confidence.
Boston College defeated Virginia 1-0, before losing to Maryland 1-0 in overtime.
The new season began as BC would host the first and second round of the NCAA Tournament. BU would present BC with a tough first round game. BC fell behind 1-0 in the match but stormed back behind goals from Victoria DiMartino and Julia Bouchelle to earn a 2-1 victory. The second round game gave BC another familiar foe, Hofstra. Earlier in the season, BC had defeated the Pride, 5-0, but since that game, Hofstra had not lost a game. The Eagles won 3-1, behind goals from Kristen Mewis, Zoe Lombard (first career goal) and Stephanie Wirth.
In the third round, the Eagles would meet up with former Big East foe West Virginia. The Eagles were on revved up on all cylinders and came away with a surprising 4-0 victory. Senior Brooke Knowlton broke out of a scoring slump to put two in the back of the net, while Julia Bouchelle and Victoria DiMartino also notched a goal. Kristen Mewis set up the first two goals of the match.
In one of the most exciting moments of the season, Hannah Cerrone scored off a corner kick to defeat Washington in the Sweet 16 match on Nov. 27. It will go down as a historic goal in the program history as it sent the Eagles to their first Final Four appearance.
Despite losing to Stanford, 2-0, at the College Cup, Boston College has taken the gradual steps in building a nationally known program. This season is the first of what many hope will be more appearances at the College Cup.
