No. 25 Women's Basketball Defeats Rutgers, 84-75

No. 25 Boston College hit eight foul shots in the final minute to seal a 84-75 victory over Rutgers at Conte Forum on Sunday afternoon.
BC is now 10-0, while Rutgers drops to 6-4 on the season. This is the best start for BC in the history of the program. The 2003-04 team went 12-1. That BC team won the first seven games, lost to George Washington and then won five more games. The 2004-05 team went 12-1 to open the season but lost the second game of the year.
BC had four different players in double-figures including Carolyn Swords with 20 points (six boards, two blocks) and Stefanie Murphy had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Jaclyn Thoman had another solid game as she notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists. Sophomore Kerri Shields finished with 18 points and went 4-for-8 from the three-point line.
The Eagles had a 28 point lead with 12 minutes to play after Murphy hit a lay-up. Slowly, Rutgers cut into the lead and six points with one minute to play in the match. Behind the Rutgers run was April Sykes who scored 10 of her 32 points in the game.
BC sealed the win when Shields, Murphy, Swords and Thoman each hit two foul shots with a minute to play.
In the first half, the Eagles shot 58 percent from the floor and shot 53 percent from the three-point line in the first half. Shields led BC in the first half with 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the three-point line, while Kristen Doherty, Thoman and Sword each had eight points.
BC's largest lead in the first half was 20 points with 3:32 to play. Shield's fourth three at the buzzer gave the Eagles a 47-30 halftime lead.
The Eagles shot 49 percent from the floor for the game, while shooting 40 percent from the three-point line. Rutgers shot 43 percent from the floor in the game.
Rutgers was led by Sykes with 32 points (6-for-11 from the arc) and Khadijah Rushdan with 23 points.

The Eagles will next play UNC-Wilmington on Sunday, Dec. 19 at noon, prior to the men's game vs. Bryant ... The last time BC defeated Rutgers was in the 2003-04 season when the Eagles earned a 75-57 victory at the Big East Tournament ... Stefanie Murphy earned her fifth straight double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds ... Jaclyn Thoman earned her second career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
