The Boston College (17-6-1) women's soccer team, ranked second in the Portland Region, advanced to the semifinals of the 2010 NCAA Soccer Tournament for the first time in program history. The Eagles will play No. 1 Stanford on Friday, Dec. 3 at 6:30 p.m. (ESPNU) at WakeMed Soccer Park in the semifinals of the 2010 College Cup.
The Eagles are coming off a 1-0 overtime victory over Washington in the Elite Eight game. Senior Hannah Cerrone scored four minutes into overtime to send the Eagles to the Final Four.
Boston College took off early Wednesday morning from Logan to get in a training session at WakeMed in Cary, North Carolina.
NCAA Tournament
The Eagles have advanced to the Final Four for the first time in program history. BC opened the NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 victory over cross-town rival Boston University in the first round game. The Eagles sent Hofstra home in the second round with a 3-1 win.
In the Sweet 16 game at the Newton Soccer Field on Nov. 27, BC defeated West Virginia, 4-0, behind two goals from senior Brooke Knowlton. BC goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni picked up her eighth shutout in the win over West Virginia.
On Saturday, Nov. 27, Boston College hosted its first Elite Eight match at the Newton Soccer Field. In front of a packed crowd, the Eagles battled Washington as snow flurries came down. Boston College survived the marathon game with a 1-0 win behind an overtime goal by senior defender Hannah Cerrone. It was Cerrone's second GWG of the season. Jillian Mastroianni earned her ninth shutout with five saves in the match.
BC vs. Stanford
Boston College and Stanford have played three times. Stanford leads the all-time series, 2-0-1. The two teams met for the first time on August 31 in Palo Alto, California. BC lost 3-0. The second match between the two teams took place in California at last season's Elite Eight on Nov. 27. Boston College lost 3-1. In that game, BC led 1-0 on a goal by Julia Bouchelle. Stanford then scored three unanswered goals.
BC and Stanford battled in the 2010 regular season opener at Chestnut Hill. The game ended in a 1-1 tie. Stanford scored in the 55th minute on a goal from Lindsay Taylor from 23 yards out. The Eagles tied the game in the 64th minute when Natalie Crutchfield converted on a brilliant through ball behind the defense from Kristie Mewis. The Eagles were out shot in the match, 22-9. BC's goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni had 10 saves in the match to preserve a tie.
Mewis Magic
Sophomore Kristen Mewis has developed into the Eagles most dangerous weapon on offense. The Eagles midfielder has the well-known left foot shot that teams have worked hard to stop but Mewis is more than the "shot".
The native of Hanson, MA, has become one of the best playmakers in the game as she set a new program record when she connected with Brooke Knowlton for the game-winning goal against West Virginia. She now has 14 assists, breaking the program record of 13 held by both Sarah Rahko'00 and Ann Porell '81. The 14 assists placed Mewis atop the leaders in the ACC along with UNC's Courtney Jones in that category. Boston College has scored nine goals in the tournament and Mewis has one goal and four assists. Two helpers led the game-winning goals.
Cerrone's Moment
Senior Hannah Cerrone scored the biggest goal in her four-year career at Boston College. The senior, known for her competitive nature on and off the field, scored the game-winning goal against Washington at four minutes into the overtime period. A native of Wappingers Falls, NY, Cerrone took a corner kick which bent over teammate Brooke Knowlton's head and past the Washington keeper into the far post. Cerrone, a de-fender, has played in a team high 90 career games. Cerrone has recorded eight goals, 23 assists for 39 points. She has four game-winning goals.
Corner Kicks
• BC men's hockey coach Jerry York addressed the team on Tuesday prior to the Eagles practice. York is a regular at BC athletic events and has attended a number of regular season games as well as a couple of NCAA games this season.
• Assistant Coach Mike LaVigne is enjoying the BC run as much as the players. LaVigne started the wom-en's soccer program at BC in the 1980's and was one of the first college coaches in the country in women's soccer. He led BC to its first two NCAA appearances in 1982 and 1983.
• Goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni is 4-0 in the tournament and has made 12 saves. Mastroianni picked up her ninth shutout of the season to give her 33 in her career. She is four away from tying the program record of 37 set by Courtney Schaeffer '00.
• Boston College is the only ACC team remaining in the NCAA Tournament. BC and Florida State were the final two ACC teams left in the Elite Eight round. With the Eagles advancing to the College Cup, the ACC has placed a team in the Final Four six consecutive seasons.
• BC is 7-3 in the last 10 games and 4-1 in the last five games. The only loss in the last five games came against Maryland in overtime in the conference tournament.
• Top Drawer Soccer placed BC third in its soccer poll this week. In the NSCAA's final regular season poll, BC was 18, while Soccer Times has the Eagles at 10 and a 16 placement from Soccer America.
• Hannah Cerrone and Jillian Mastroianni were named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week for their stellar play in the Elite Eight win over Washington.
• Boston College is 16-12-3 in the NCAA Tournament. The programs first appearance in the NCAA's came in 1982. Since the 2007 season, BC is 8-2-1. BC has gained an NCAA berth 10 consecutive seasons under the guidance of Head Coach Alison Foley. The Eagles have appeared in seven Sweet 16's and two consecu-tive Elite Eights.
• The Eagles program has earned 15 or more victories in the last three seasons. 2010 - 15-6-1 2009 - 18-4-2 2008 - 17-6-2
• Freshman Kate McCarthy has four starts this season and all have come in the NCAA Tournament. The midfielder from Longmeadow, MA battled nagging injuries early in the season and seems to be using the tournament as her coming out party. The Eagles have moved McCarthy into the defensive midfield position and have moved junior Julia Bouchelle up into the offensive. In just four games, McCarthy and Bouchelle have developed a solid chemistry in the middle of the field.
