The No. 18/10 Boston College women's soccer team is hosting the NCAA "Sweet 16" match against No. 14/16 West Virginia tonight at the Newton Soccer Field at 7 p.m.
Boston College defeated Boston University, 2-1, in the first round of the tournament. Junior Julia Bouchelle scored the game-winning goal.
In the second round match, Kristen Mewis notched a goal and an assist to lead BC past Hostra, 3-1. Freshman Zoe Lombard notched the game-winner with the insurance goal coming off the foot of Stephanie Wirth.
BC vs. West Virginia
The Eagles have not played West Virginia since the 2004 season. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series, 5-0-1.
West Virginia won the 2010 Big East Championship. In the NCAA Tournament, the Mountaineers defeated Morehead State, 2-0; followed by a second round, 2-1, victory over Penn State.
Corner Kicks
• Boston College sophomores Kristen Mewis and Victoria DiMartino were named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Season, second team this week.
• Mewis and DiMartino have become one of the most dangerous scoring duos in the programs history. Mewis and DiMartino have combined for 23 goals, 21 asissts and 66 points.
• The Eagles are 3-2 in the last five games. Three of those games were against teams ranked in the Top 10.
• In the last five games, Boston College has had six different goal scorers. Three players - Julia Bouchelle, Maddie Payne and Zoe Lombard - have all notched their first goal of the season. Kristen Mewis leads BC with a goal and two assists in the last five matches.
• Freshmen Katie McCarthy and Zoe Lombard made their first career starts in the NCAA Tournament. McCarthy, a native of Longmeadow, MA, started in the win over Boston University, followed by her first full 90 minutes in the win over Hofstra. Lombard's first start was against Hofstra. The rookie from Florida also notched her first career goal in the win.
• Tonight's winner will play either UC Irvine-Washington. The Elite Eight match will be the following weekend.
