NEWTON, Mass. -
Brooke Knowlton scored a goal in each half to lead Boston College to a 4-0 win over West Virginia and a trip back to the Elite Eight for the second consecutive season. The BC win snapped West Virginia's 14 game winning streak, the second longest in the country.
The Eagles also handed the Mountaineers just their third shutout in their last 11 NCAA matches.
Play centered around midfield, until Natalie Crutchfield had the first real scoring opportunity for the Eagles after 30 minutes had elapsed in the first half. Finding herself one-on-one against the goalie, Crutchfield took a high arcing shot that crossed the goal and hit the left post to bounce back into play.
It wasn't much later when BC was the first to crack the scoreboard in the 22nd minute. After a few passes in front of the net, Brooke Knowlton collected a pass from Kristen Mewis on the left post and kicked it into the far right pocket to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
The Eagles did it again in the 14th minute when Julia Bouchelle scored with another assist from Mewis to make it 2-0 going into halftime.
BC dominated the first half, holding a 9-3 edge in shots over the Mountaineers.
The Eagles kept up the intensity in the second half as Knowlton scored her second goal of the game in the 56th minute as she crushed it into the top of the net, bouncing back down into the goal behind Mountaineers' goalkeeper Kerri Butler. Assisting on the goal were Crutchfield and Hannah Cerrone.
With 29 minutes remaining, BC goalie Jillian Mastroianni came out of goal to scoop up the ball for a big save to keep West Virginia off the scoreboard.
The Eagles tallied a fourth goal with six minutes remaining as Victoria DiMartino scored off a pass from Gibby Wagner to seal a 4-0 win.
Mastroianni made two saves, while West Virginia's Butler tallied nine.
With the win, BC improves to 16-6-1 while West Virginia ends its season at 18-5-1.
The Eagles will play in the Elite Eight game next weekend at home for the first time against the winner of the UC-Irvine/Washington game, set to take place on Saturday, November 20.
