LAST WEEK
The Eagles played a weekend series at St. Lawrence, where they were served their first loss of the season. The loss broke BC's undefeated streak, which was the longest in the country this season and the only one left in Division I women's hockey. BC was without starting goalie Molly Schaus and starting defenseman Meagan Mangene, who participated in the Four Nations Cup with Team USA.
On Friday, November 12 a dominant St. Lawrence came up with a 7-3 win. Despite BC's 14 shots in the opening frame, St. Lawrence scored four goals in the first before BC could respond. At 18:49 Melissa Bizzari finally broke through on a pass from Katelyn Kurth. The Saints answered with a fifth goal at 11:50 in the second as Caitlin Walsh sat in the penalty box. Two minutes later, the Eagles got another score on the board when Mary Restuccia netted a shot to bring the score to 5-2.
Blake Bolden narrowed the gap to 5-3 with a goal to open up scoring in the third period at the 3:40 mark. The power play goal was assisted by Mary Restuccia and Kelli Stack. St. Lawrence notched goals at 9:12 and 16:37 as BC attempted a comeback, putting the Eagles behind 7-3.
On Saturday, November 13 the Eagles scored first to get an early lead. At 19:45 in the first period, Mary Restuccia took advantage of a power play opportunity to net her second goal in as many games, with assists from Kelli Stack and Ashley Motherwell.
Then at 19:45 in the second period, St. Lawrence responded with a power play goal of its own to end the second period tied at one. Despite 10 shots for BC in the third period and six in the overtime frame, no one was able to find the back of the net for a win.
Kiera Kingston stopped 53 shots in her second and third starts of the season, totaling 74 this season for a .871 save percentage.
FOUR NATIONS CUP SILVER MEDALISTS
From November 9-13 the Eagles' senior captain goaltender Molly Schaus and freshman starting defender Meagan Mangene travled to St. John's, Newfoundland to compete in the Four Nations Cup as members of the U.S. Women's Select Team. Joined by former BC women's hockey player Allie Thunstrom (BC '09), the three athletes walked away with the silver medal to add to their already remarkable hardware collections.
Team USA handled Canada, Finland, and Sweden before meeting Canada again in the championship game on November 13. The U.S. had won the previous game on November 9 3-2 in a shooutout, but it was Canada who walked away with the gold medal win a close 3-2 contest that was won on a power play goal in overtime.
Schaus made an impressive 49 saves in the game to be named U.S. Player of the Game. Schaus started in two of four games and recorded a total of 71 saves. Her 4-0 shutout over Finland was the fifth in her U.S. career.
