BURLINGTON, VT - Junior forward Jimmy Hayes netted two third-period goals to bring the Eagles within one goal - at 4-3 - with 3:50 remaining in the third period but host Catamounts preserved their lead and added an empty-net goal with 33.9 seconds remaining to defeat sixth-ranked Boston College, 5-3, before a sellout crowd of 4,007 fans at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Vermont led 2-1 after one period. After a scoreless middle frame, it increased its 4-1 on third-period goals from H.T. Lenz at 2:28 and Connor Brickley at 8:44.
Hayes trimmed the Eagles' deficit to 4-2 at 12:49, redirecting defenseman Isaay MacLeod's shot from the point for his fourth goal of the season. Hayes then scored his second goal of the game just 3:21 later to bring BC back within one - at 4-3 - at 16:10.
With BC goaltender Parker Milner pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Vermont's Tobias Nilsson-Roos sealed the victory into an empty net at 19:26.
Milner finished with 24 saves in the losing effort while Vermont junior goalie Rob Madore made 34 stops to earn the win. Milner fell to 1-2-0 while Madore improved to 1-4-3.
BC out shot Vermont, 37-29, including a 14-6 edge in the scoreless middle period.
For the second time in as many nights, the host Catamounts built an early one-goal lead on a goal from Chris McCarthy. The sophomore forward netted a power-play goal 59 seconds into Friday's 3-2 BC victory. He opened the scoring even strength at 1:27 on Saturday.
Junior Cam Atkinson netted the equalizer on the power play less than four minutes later. Vermont's Sebastian Stalberg put the Catamounts up 2-1 with his first goal of the season at 15:32.
