Franklin Park, Boston, Mass. -
The No. 22 Boston College women's cross country team turned in a superb performance to clinch the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Cross Country Championship on Saturday in Franklin Park, Boston, Mass. The Eagles claimed their second team title in three years and third overall with 26 points against a 47 team field featuring eight nationally-ranked and 16 regionally-ranked programs.
In the field of 322 runners, the BC front-five all finished in the top 12 and the entire varsity squad came in within a minute and twenty seconds of each other.
"This was a great win for our team," head coach Randy Thomas said. "Our sub-varsity put together a very impressive run in the first race of the day and the varsity looked very strong in theirs. Both groups ran well together and they continue to demonstrate how deep our lineup really is. It's a great course and I was happy to see everyone do so well."
Junior Jillian King and senior Caroline King ran out front with the defending champion Corey Conner, from the University of Maine. The trio led the pack at the beginning of the race, but by the time they reached "The Wilderness" (about 2 miles in), Conner had created some distance between herself and the two sisters.
Conner would come in at 16:54 to take the individual title, but afterward the final stretch of the five kilometer course became a sea of Maroon and Gold.
Jillian King would begin the onslaught for the Eagles. The All-ACC member busted out her second fastest time of the season to cross the line in 17:22 and take second place overall.
Caroline King came at 17:26 for third place and the remainder of BC point scorers followed with personal records (PR). Sophomore Elizabeth Hynes finished in fourth overall with a time of 17:30. Senior walk-on Hope Krause lowered her PR by 12 seconds to 17:40 for fifth place and sophomore Allison Stasiuk came in at 18-flat, 24 seconds under her previous PR, to claim 12th place.
Sophomore Sarah Lord and senior Siobhan Breagy rounded out the varsity roster. Lord crossed in 18:25 at 29th overall position and Breagy completed the course in 18:42 in 40th place for BC.
Moments prior to the women's varsity heat, the sub-varsity swept its race, taking nine of the first 10 spots. Eight runners posted either a new personal record or their fastest time of the season.
Senior Madeline Wallace paced the field with her quickest time of the year (18:19). Sophomore Grace Rodriguez ran 18:31in her first meet of the 2010 season, taking second overall, while junior Elizabeth McGuirk followed at 18:32.
The top 10 was penciled in with Elizabeth O'Brien (18:37), Kaitlyn Cooney (18:38), Samantha Gawrych (18:46), Alanna Poretta (18:49), Olivia Fay of Williams, Jessica Driscoll (18:57) and Caitlyn Bailey (19:02).
