CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The 21 Boston College student-athletes returned just over a week ago from their five-day service trip to Poplarville, Mississippi. The student-athletes traveled down to Mississippi in hopes of lending a hand in the continuous effort of trying to rebuild the Gulf Coast Region after Hurricane Katrina.
Student-athletes from ten different teams at Boston College participated in the trip, and every single one of them made significant contributions in helping the Katrina Relief Organization. The athletes helped with tasks ranging from painting houses, to helping with community paperwork, and everything else in-between. The group had an amazing week and met several residents with awe-inspiring stories. The cost of this trip was underwritten by Michael Devlin '88 co-founder of the Devlin SAFE Program for Leadership Development with his brother Matthew Devlin '90.
"The trip was such an important experience to us because it took us outside of our comfort zone - campus, conte, home - into a situation where people have such a different life than we are used to. I don't think that anyone expected there to be so much work that still needs to be done. I was really moved talking to the people who still need help, hearing the struggles they still have four half years later, especially those who are disabled or ill." - Caitlin Bailey `10
"Immersing ourselves into a community outside of the Boston area was eye-awakening. Even five years after the catastrophe, there is still a tremendous amount of people that need help restructuring their lives. During my New Orleans experience I realized that I can positively impact the greater world community with a simple donation of my time and effort. And that's inspiring." - Kyle McCartan `12
