Chestnut Hill, Ma - Boston College women's soccer was represented in this afternoon's Women's Professional Soccer League Draft in Philadelphia, PA. Senior defender Kelly Henderson was chosen in the fourth round by the Philadelphia Independence while senior midfielder Gina DiMartino will stay local as the Boston Breakers selected her in the sixth round.
"I am absolutely thrilled to have been drafted by the Philadelphia Independence! I has always been a dream of mine to play professional soccer and I am so thankful for this opportunity to continue my career," said BC senior Kelly Henderson.
Henderson, a defender for the 18-4-2 Eagles, started all 24 games. A native of Baldwin, NY, she was the key to the Eagles defense which posted 16 shutouts and held opponents to 13 goals. A second team All-ACC selection, Henderson played center midfield for the Eagles for the first three seasons and moved to the defense this past season.
She was named a semifinalist for the 2009 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy, the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer. Henderson, who will graduate from BC in May, is also a first team NCAA Division 1 All-America selection.
DiMartino, a native of Massapequa Park, NY, was chosen in the ninth round by the Breakers. DiMartino had an outstanding season at midfield for the Eagles. A second team All-ACC selection, DiMartino finished the season with eight goals, six assists for 22 points. She was also a NSCAA Regional All-American second team selection.
After four seasons, DiMartino played in 84 career games and finished her career with 71 points (25 goals, 21 assists) good enough for seventh on the all-time scoring list. As a freshman, DiMartino was the ACC Freshman of the Year. She will join her older sister Christine, who plays for the LA Sol, in the WPS. DiMartino will earn a degree from Boston College in May, 2010.
BC has had four players drafted by professional the women's professional soccer league in the United States. Last January, BC assistant coach Kia McNeill was selected ninth by St. Louis in the WPS. In December of 2000, Sarah Powell, who played in 82 games as a defender for BC, was selected in the seventh round (51 overall) by the Boston Breakers in the WUSA Inaugural Draft. Powell graduated in May 2001 from the Heights.
