CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College volleyball team lost a tough match to Duke on Sunday, falling in three sets to the Blue Devils in Chestnut Hill.
BC drops to 10-4 this season while Duke improves to 13-2.
The first set started off fairly well for the hometown Eagles, as they managed to stay close to the Blue Devils and pull within two points to make the score 19-17 nearing the end of the first set. A powerful kill by sophomore Jordan Meredith tied the match at 21-21 and sent the fans into a wild frenzy. Duke would not give up just yet, however, and the Blue Devils grabbed a 23-22 lead with the Eagles pressure still strong. Despite eleven kills by the Eagles, five from Meredith, Boston College could not capitalize on nine Duke errors and the Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the match.
Boston College did its best to stay with the Blue Devils for another set, but Duke looked very strong from the first serve and managed to take a 20-9 lead before the Eagles could catch their breath. The Eagles played well in the frame, but nine kills and a .135 hitting percentage was not enough to overcome the Duke lead and the Blue Devils grabbed a two set lead with a 25-14 win.
The Eagles came out of the locker-room for the third set with some lost firepower that had avoided them during the second set. The score was 5-1 in BC's favor before Duke came roaring back into the match and took a 10-6 lead over the Eagles within what seemed like seconds. The Eagles' struggles continued as the Blue Devils only built on their lead and took a commanding 21-14 point lead in the third frame. BC could only gather together a hitting percentage of -.028 and Duke was able to take the third set 25-16 and win the match.
Boston College was led on offense by senior Taylor Williams' 10 kills while Meredith followed closely with nine.
The Eagles' defense was backed by junior Kristen Baader, whose 21 digs were tops for her team.
Boston College will practice this week in Chestnut Hill before travelling to North Carolina next weekend to take on the Tar Heels on Friday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m.
