CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College volleyball team gave its best effort in a comeback attempt, but lost a heartbreaker to Wake Forest, 3-2 on Thursday in Chestnut Hill.
BC dropped to 10-3 this season while the Demon Deacons moved to 3-10.
The Eagles looked to rebound off their tough loss to Maryland on Tuesday and restart another winning streak that had carried them to a 10-1 record prior to the match with the Terrapins. Wake Forest provided some resistance to the BC attack but the Eagles still managed to grab a 20-16 lead near the end of the first set. Sophomore Mollie Kolosky led the hometown team with six kills in the first frame and BC was able to take the first set in the match, 25-22.
Although it was a strong performance in the first set, the Eagles needed to make something happen quickly in the second, after they fell behind 14-7 early on. The Demon Deacons continued to build on their lead, bringing it up to 22-17. Despite the Eagles' 10 kills and eight digs, the team could not come back from the Wake Forest pressure and the Demon Deacons evened out the match at two sets apiece.
The two teams kept the even pace going in the third set when a quick kill by freshman Krystle Higgins gave the Eagles a 9-8 lead. Wake Forest would have none of it, however, and the Deacons surged ahead in the match to take a 17-12 lead in the third frame.
Yet the Eagles proved that they were not finished in the set and made an incredible charge to come within one of Wake Forest, and make the score 21-20. Even though BC made a great rush in the frame and put up 17 kills and 29 digs, the Deacons were able to find the edge and move within one set win of taking the match.
The fourth set continued to show the even match-up of the teams when the score stood at 6-6. Senior Taylor Williams then decided to stop play for a few minutes when one of her powerful attacks went flying into the net, causing the support chains to break and the entire net to topple over.
After a short delay, play continued with the Deacons eventually moving ahead 11-9 in the fourth set, but BC came roaring back quickly to jump ahead, 22-21. One final kill by freshman Krissy Mussenden gave the Eagles a wild fourth set victory and would send the match to a deciding fifth set.
The Eagles knew that they needed to put everything into the final set in order to overcome the arduous test put forth by Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons had the same thoughts, however, and they went ahead 10-6 in the fifth frame, needing only five more points to take a victory.
The hometown crowd got behind their team and put some fight into the Eagles, giving them the energy to knot the score at 10-10, but Wake Forest was able to grab that last bit of energy left on the floor and sneak past the Eagles to give BC its third loss of the season.
Boston College was led on the attack by sophomore Jordan Meredith, whose 17 kills were good enough for tops on the team.
The Eagles' defense was extremely strong on the night, with four players reaching double digits in digs. Sophomore Brennan Clark led the way with 33 while junior Kristen Baader had 19 and Meredith and Mussenden added 16 of their own.
The Eagles will play one more match in Chestnut Hill, taking on Duke this Sunday, September 27 at 12:00 p.m. before embarking on a four match road trip.
