Chestnut Hill, MA - Boston College women's basketball program signed five high school seniors to National Letters of Intent, Eagles Head Coach Sylvia Crawley announced on Thursday afternoon.
The five members of the class of 2014 - Shayra Brown from Brooklyn, New York; Korina Chapman from Albuquerque, New Mexico; Kristen Doherty from Holtsville, New York; Tiffany Ruffin from Seabrook, New Hampshire and Katie Zenevitch from Lawrence, Massachusetts - is ranked 12th by ESPN/HoopGurlz.
"I smile every time I think about our recruiting class of 2010, because they will help this program become more of an up-tempo and defensive team. I gave myself a three year plan to gradually implement my system with our current players, while simultaneously recruiting players who already play up-tempo,'' said BC Head Coach Sylvia Crawley. "All five players can press and run in transition, yet they still fit the characteristics of our present team. My goal was to lay a foundation so we could put the right pieces together to build a solid team.''
Brown, a 5-foot-9 guard, is a senior at Bishop Ford C.C. High School. Last season she averaged 20 points, six rebounds and four assists a game at Bishop Ford. She helped the team advance to the Class A State She earned the Sharette Dixon Memorial Classic Academic Excellence Ward and was the MVP of the tournament. Brown was also a Daily News All-City selection. She is also a volleyball player and earned the team MVP honors last season. Brown plays AAU ball for coach Apache Paschall and the Exodus-NYC.
"Shayra will bring athleticism to our program. She can shoot, run, jump, and penetrate,'' said Crawley. "Shayra will fit well with the up-tempo system I'm moving this program towards. I believe she will do well at BC because she has a good attitude and she is also a good student."
Chapman, a 5-foot-11 forward, is a senior at Cibola High in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Chapman played for Valley High as a freshman and sophomore. She helped Cibola High advance to the state final. As a junior, she led the state in rebounding with 352 boards. Chapman is a two-time first team all-district honoree and a third team All-Metro selection in 2008-09. Chapman, who also plays volleyball, is a preseason first-team All-State selection in basketball.
"Korina is one of those players that you hate to play against because she plays hard non-stop,'' said Crawley. "She is a versatile player who will cause matchup problems at the small or power forward position."
Doherty, a 5-foot-11 guard, plays for Sachem East High in Farmingville, New York. Doherty is ranked 12th in the nation by ESPN/HoopGurlz. She is a five-time All-League honoree and four-time All-County selection. Doherty, who averaged 27 points per game as a junior, is a three-time All-Long Island and All-State honoree. She is a three-time team captain and plays AAU ball with the Long Island Extreme.
"We're extremely happy about the addition of Kristen Doherty to our Eagle Family. She is a full package player, who is extremely mentally tough. I love that she plays several positions, which will allow me the flexibility to play different combinations on the floor," said Crawley.
Ruffin, a 5-foot-7 guard, attends Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, New Hampshire. She averaged 17 points and seven assists a game and helped the team win the Class L State Title. She was the Class L Tournament MVP and was the Manchester Union Leader first team all-state player. A two-time New Hampshire Gatorade Player of the Year, Ruffin is ranked 92nd nationally by ESPN/HoopGurlz. Ruffin has also played softball for three seasons at Winnacunnet.
"Tiffany is a player that will take great pride in wearing a Boston College uniform,'' said Crawley. "She is deceivingly good because she isn't flashy but does many things well. She has the quickness and IQ to be a solid point guard in the ACC."
Zenevitch, a 6-foot-3 forward, is a senior at Central Catholic High School. She has led her team to three consecutive state championships, three Merrimack Valley Conference titles and three Division 1 North Eastern Mass. Championships. Zenevitch is ranked 63rd nationally by ESPN/HoopGurlz and 10th in the forward spot in the class of 2010. She is a Boston Herald Dream Team member and a Boston Globe All-Scholastic. Zenevitch averaged 19 points, 15 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game as a junior. She is also an MVC All-Star in volleyball and helped the team advance to the state final in 2008.
"I'm happy that we were able to keep Katie in the state of Massachusetts, because she will play with pride to defend our home court. Katie has a soft touch when facing the basket, and she is also physical with her back to the basket. I'm most impressed with her ability to pass as a center,'' said Crawley.
