CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College field hockey team got a second-half goal from Chelsey Feole, and excellent goaltending from Kristine Stigas, to pull off a dramatic 1-0 upset over non-conference powerhouse Syracuse before 456 fans on Senior Day at Newton Campus Field.
The win improves the Eagles to 12-4 for the season, while the loss drops the Orange to 15-2.
Syracuse dominated the first 35 minutes of the game keeping the ball on the Boston College side of the field for almost the entire first half. The Orange put a plethora of shots on the BC goal in the first half, but Stigas came up huge for the Eagles registering nine saves to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
Boston College came out with much more energy to start the second half as the Eagles finally seemed to get their offense on track.
The Boston College energy, and patience, finally paid off as the Eagles scored the lone goal of the game in the 47th minute of play. Chelsey Feole scored her 18th goal of the season off a penalty corner to give BC the 1-0 lead. Janna Anctil and Emily Kozniuk helped set up the Feole goal off the penalty corner, and they both now have 11 assists each on the season.
This was all the offense Stigas would need as she was on the top of her game making 13 total saves in the game to preserve the BC win.
BC is back in action on Wednesday, October 28 as they will host cross-town rival Harvard University on MS Day. The game will start at 7 p.m.
Game Notes: October is the month of upsets for the Eagles as they took down the No. 5 Orange this October, and last October they defeated No. 4 North Carolina...Janna Anctil has now registered a point in four straight games for Boston College....The Eagles are now 6-1 at home this season with their lone loss coming to No. 1 Maryland...The 13 saves by Stigas in today's game were the second-most by her in a single game this season. She made 14 saves in the overtime win at No. 11 UMass.
