
Swimming and Diving Competes At UMass-Amherst

The Boston College swimming and diving team competed in a dual meet with UMass-Amherst yesterday at Joseph Rogers Pool in the team's first competition in 2009. The men's team fell to the Minutemen, 184-104, while the women's team fell 191-109.
Leading the way for the men's team was John Maloy, who picked up 15 points for the Eagles with a victory in the 200 yard individual medley (1:57.82), a second place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (4:43.09), and a fourth place finish in the 1000 yard freestyle (9:53.49).
Collin Thilo also picked up nine points for BC with a first place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (52.79).
The men's 200 yard freestyle relay team of Brett Bromann, C. Peter Ferguson, Alex Spaeth, and Robert Swaninger recorded a first place finish with a time of 1:29.48.
On the women's side, Katie Fritsch recorded her best performance of the year in the 100 backstroke, taking first place with a time of 1:00.49. Fritsch also finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:11.07) for a total of 13 points on the afternoon.
The women's 200 yard freestyle relay team of Kelly Leahey, Lauren Nightengale, Michaela Morr, and Caroline Byron earned 11 points with a first place time of 1:40.63.
The men's and women's teams will be back in action at home on Jan. 30, when they begin a two-day meet with Maine, Rhode Island, and Dartmouth at the Flynn Recreation Complex Pool.
