Chestnut Hill, MA - Former Boston College women's soccer player Kia McNeill was selected ninth overall in the 2009 Women's Professional Soccer League Draft by the Saint Louis Athletica in St. Louis, Missouri today.
McNeill, who plays both forward and on defense, graduated from Boston College in May of 2008. She played overseas for Kristianstad in Sweden from May to September.
A native of Avon, CT, McNeill was a four-year starter and played in 86 consecutive games. She notched one goal and one assist her senior season even though she made the switch from forward to defense. The move proved to be key as McNeill was crucial to the Eagles defense as it was ranked sixth in the country in goals-against-average (0.475). McNeill finished her career as the eight all-time leading scorers with 61 career points.
McNeill is the second women's player to be selected by the professional women's soccer team in the United States. In December of 2000, Sarah Powell, who played in 82 games as a defender for BC, was selected in the seventh round (51 overall) by the Boston Breakers in the WUSA Inaugural Draft. Powell graduated in May 2001 from the Heights.
