Chestnut Hill, Ma - Boston College field hockey coach Ainslee Lamb is pleased to announce the incoming class of 2012. The Eagles will welcome six new faces to the roster for the 2009 season and they are: Nicole Barry, Annie Giglio, Kate Gillis, Catherine O'Brien, Carla Tamer and Courtney Tavener.
"We are thrilled to welcome the class of 2012 to Boston College. We are fortunate to have a class of very talented athletes join the team and contribute to the growth of the program,'' said BC head coach Ainslee Lamb. "Each student-athlete is from an excellent high school program and all of their extracurricular involvement has prepared them for the next step competing at the ACC level.''
Barry, a native of Voorhees, NJ, was a standout goalkeeper at Eastern High School (NJ). She holds the record for most shutouts in a single season with 22 and led her team to an undefeated season (26-0), the New Jersey State Championship and the No. 1 ranking in the state. She was second-team All-Conference and All-State in Group IV in New Jersey.
"I am looking forward to having Nicole join the team. She is very competitive and loves to play the game,'' said Lamb of Barry.
Giglio, a native of Emmaus, PA, is a three year varsity player, who helped Emmaus High capture the state title in 2004 and 2005, the Class 3A Championship and LVIAC League Championships from 2004-2006. She earned first-team All-State honors, All-Conference and was named to the Morning Call All-Area Team. She has been in the USFHA Futures Program since 2004. She was also the East Penn News Athlete of the Season in 2006.
"It is exciting to have Annie join us from a nationally renowned program. She is an excellent athlete who started playing field hockey late. I am looking forward to being a part of her learning curve with the sport,'' said Lamb of Giglio.
Gillis, a native of Kingston, Ontario (Canada), played at Regiopolis-Notre Dame High School. She played field hockey, ice hockey and soccer in high school. Gillis helped lead her high school field hockey team to two consecutive KASSA and EOSSA Championships. She is also a member of the Ontario Provincial field hockey team since 2004 and earned a Gold Medal with the Under-19 team in 2006. She also led her hockey team to the York Tournament Championship in 2006.
"Kate's decision to defer from BC and represent Canada in its pursuit of an Olympic bid was a great decision. She has grown physically and mentally over the last year of training even thought Canada fell short of their bid to Bejing. I know her international experiences will impact the BC program immediately,'' said Lamb of Gillis.
O'Brien, a native of Canton, MA, is a four-year varsity player at Canton High School. She was a member of the 2004 and the 2006 Division 2 State Championship teams. She is a three-time Hockomock League All-Star and was a two-time Boston Herald and Boston Globe All-Scholastic. In four years, she has helped Canton compile a 75-5-7 record and two state titles.
"I am thrilled to have Catherine continue her family tradition at BC with the field hockey program,'' said Lamb of O'Brien. "Her focus and passion for the game is admirable. Her work ethic is incredible. I am confident Catherine will step up and exceed the challenges of playing Div 1 field hockey in the ACC.''
Tamer, a native of Germany, was a three-year starter for Hotchkiss in Lakeville, CT. A team captain, Tamer played both center midfield and center back. She was named to the All-New England Tournament team in 2006 and 2007. A Western New England All-Star, Tamer compiled 16 goals and 14 assists. She was also awarded The Carole S. Hawley '75 Award - given to the players whose high standard of play, improvement in personal skills, and unselfish teamwork have made the greatest contribution to the success of the field hockey team.
"We are fortunate to have a player and person of Carla's caliber join the team. I am impressed with her maturity and approach to her education and field hockey pursuits. Carla is certainly an athlete that maintains her composure in all situations,'' said Lamb of Tamer.
Tavener, a native of Winchester, MA, was a four-year standout at Winchester High School. She graduated as the No. 1 scorer in the school's history with 55 goals and 36 assists. In 2007, Tavener was named the MVP of the Middlesex League and was a four-time league all-star. She was also a Boston Herald and Boston Globe All-Scholastic. She is involved in the Futures Program and played in the Mass. State Field Hockey Assoc. Best of 60 Senior All-Star.
"Courtney will be an exciting addition to the team. She is a very skilled athlete with tremendous athletic strengths. I am confident that she will step up to the expectations with her usual enthusiasm,'' said Lamb of Tavener.
