Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College field hockey team participated in the MS LifeLines Walk for Boston on Sunday to raise money for the MS Society. The Eagles were part of Murphy's Law, a team comprised of junior forward Kathleen Murphy's friends and family. As a whole, they raised over $8,000, the highest total of all school groups.
Murphy was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in April 2007, at the age of 20. She continues to attend BC and play field hockey at the Heights, but she has taken on the battle to raise awareness of MS and search for a cure.
The 75 members of Murphy's Law included the Eagles and the Providence field hockey team, former BC players Caitlyn Young, Crystal Frates, Mary DeFilippo, Brenna Leahy and Lauren Parks, three BC women's ice hockey players, as well as Murphy's family and friends from various facets of her life. The team walked three miles with thousands of others hoping to raise money and awareness for the disease.
"The walk on Sunday turned out great," Murphy said. "I couldn't begin to explain how much it meant to me to see all my family, friends and teammates show up on a cold and rainy day to show their support. My starting fundraising goal for the walk was $1,000 and I thought that was going to be a long shot. I never imagined I would raise close to $9,000. It really is incredible. I'm very grateful for the support I have from everyone and I am excited for the next event."
"This was a great opportunity for the team to demonstrate their support for Murph," Head Coach Ainslee said. "I was very proud to be a part of Murphy's Law. Seeing all of the different people in Murph's life come together for one common goal was very powerful. I was also proud to see past players take the time to come to the walk and support their teammate."
