Stefanie Murphy Named ACC Rookie of the Year

CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Boston College freshman forward Stefanie Murphy was named the 2007-08 ACC Rookie of the Year and to the All-ACC Freshmen team, while teammate Carolyn Swords was also named to the All-ACC Freshmen team.
"Stefanie and Carolyn are two of the best freshmen in the ACC but they are also one of the top post-combinations in the country. We are very proud of what they have accomplished and what they will continue to bring to the program and BC community,'' said Boston College Head Coach Cathy Inglese.
The five ACC rookie of the week honors Murphy earned this past season led all conference freshmen. From Nov. 26 to Dec. 17, Murphy earned four consecutive honors. For her successful month of December, Murphy was named to the WBCA Honorable Mention team for Player of the Month.
A native of Londonderry, NH, Murphy leads the Eagles in scoring (15.5 ppg) and rebounds (7.5 rpg.). She is also the 12th leading scorer and sixth leading rebounder in the ACC. Murphy is also fourth in the conference and in the country in FG percentage (.576). She also tied a BC program record by gathering nine double-doubles.
Murphy's teammate Swords was named to the All-ACC team. Swords is the second leading scorer on the Eagles and 17th in the ACC (13.7 ppg). She is the eighth leading rebounder in the conference and second on the Eagles (7.5). Swords' leads the ACC and the country in field goal percentage (.643).
Swords', a native of Sudbury, MA, was named the ACC Rookie of the Week four times, including two in the month of February. She had five double-doubles and was perfect from the field in two games this past season - 8-for-8 vs. Miami and 6-fofr-6 vs. Georgia Tech. She also set a career-high in points (28) vs. Maryland.
Murphy and Swords makes up one of the most prolific freshman tandems in the country. The two are 12th and 16th in the nation in scoring among all freshmen. The duo helped BC improve to 19-10 overall and capture a program record seven ACC victories.
This is the first major award the Eagles program has garnered since joining the ACC in the 2005-06 season.
