Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Field hockey Head Coach Ainslee Lamb named Lauren Sickel an assistant coach for the 2008 season. Sickel was an assistant with UMass Lowell and played four years at Providence.
Sickel was part of the UMass Lowell coaching staff that directed the River Hawks to a 19-3 season. The team won the Northeast-10 regular season title for the second time in five years and the tournament title for the fifth straight season. The River Hawks lost in the NCAA Division II Championship to Bloomsburg, 5-2.
The Plaistow, N.H., native was a three-time All-Big East selection and an NFHCA All-Northeast Region honoree. She earned NFHCA All-American third-team status and was selected to play in the NFHCA Senior All-Star game. As a senior, she helped lead the team to a 18-4 record and the Big East regular season title. She racked up 26 points in her career as a Friar, scoring 10 goals and recording six assists. She was also named a captain as a junior and senior. In 2007, Providence honored Sickel with the prestigious Female Athlete of the Year.
Last summer Sickel was a member of the US High Performance New England team that traveled to and competed for the National Championship in Virginia Beach, Va. She continues to play through participation with the New England training center. She is currently coaching in the US Field Hockey Futures program in Region Three.
Lamb is very excited to add Sickel to her coaching staff.
"We are thrilled to have a player of Laurens caliber join the coaching staff," Lamb said. "She has been mentored by two of the best coaches in New England. Diane Madl at Providence worked with her throughout her playing career and Shannon Hlebichuk guided her at UMass Lowell as she finished her recent coaching stint.
"I have always admired Lauren's competitive nature and her winning attitude," Lamb continued. "I know that her experience as a player and her desire to pursue the coaching profession combined with her winning mentality will make our team and staff better."
