Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Field hockey Head Coach Ainslee Lamb named Julia Berkowitz and Chelsey Feole the captains for the 2008 season. Berkowitz, a senior next year, will serve as a captain for the second season, while Feole, a junior in 2008, will be a captain for the first time.
Berkowitz, a goalie from Amherst, Mass., racked up 108 saves in the 2007 season and compiled a 1.60 goals-against average. She held the team's 12-8 record and recorded a .777 save percentage.
Feole, a forward from Windham, N.H., was the second-leading scorer on the 2007 Eagles. She scored 11 goals and recorded two assists for 24 points. She recorded a hat trick in the 7-2 win over Holy Cross on Sept. 9 and nailed two of the Eagles' three goals in the win over Harvard on Oct. 17.
"I am certain that both Chelsey and Julia will lead this program in the direction that all of us see best for BC and the field hockey team," Lamb said. "They both exhibit excellent attributes for leading both on and off the field. They have always shown a commitment to the success of the program and are well respected by their peers and the coaching staff. Both are competitive, elite athletes who are driven to be the best that they can be without compromising their values and standards along the way. I admire their personal convictions and know that they will provide a great foundation for the future success of the team."
Two Boston College players were also named to the Canadian Women's Development Squad. Freshman Emily Kozniuk and incoming freshman Kate Gillis are two of the 28 players selected for a training camp in July 2008 held in Vancouver, BC. From this squad, a team will be picked to compete for Canada for the rest of the summer.
Kozniuk, a defender from North Vancouver, BC, started and played in 17 games last season before sustaining a knee injury. She recorded her first collegiate point in the form of an assist in the victory over Holy Cross. She also made a defensive save in the 2-1 win over Boston University on Sept. 7. Prior to BC, she was a member of the British Columbia Provincial Team for five years and in 2003, her Under-18 team won the national championship. She also received the 2006 Diana Popovich Award for the most outstanding U-18 player in the Vancouver women's league. In 2007, she was the first winner of the West Vancouver Field Hockey Club's Paul Winstanley Award for Outstanding Junior Player.
Gillis, who hails from Kingston, Ont., was admitted to BC for the fall of 2007 but deferred enrollment to train with the senior Canadian national team. Last year, she competed with the team, which included a recent tour to South Africa and test matches against the U.S. team in California. She will be playing in the upcoming Olympic qualifier to help the Canadian team qualify for the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing, China.
"We are so excited for both Emily and Kate to have this opportunity to represent their country," Lamb said. "It is a great step for the BC program to have current student-athletes training and competing at this level. Their experiences will certainly make the BC program better. Both Emily and Kate have been working very hard for this chance. Typical of elite athletes, both have made significant sacrifices to obtain this level of play. I am so happy to see all their hard work pay off."
