Women's Basketball Preps for Virginia

Chapel Hill, NC - Boston College is currently 18-9 overall and 6-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Prior to the start of the game, senior Rebecca Miles and senior Kaydia Kentish will be honored. Both Miles and Kentish are transfer students who arrived in the summer of 2006. Miles, a native of Queensland, Australia, arrived at BC from New Mexico Junior College. She is averaging 4.1 points and 2.1 rebounds a game for the Eagles. She has played in 25 games and started five. Kentish, a native of Jamaica, transferred from Tallahassee Community College. She has earned 15 starts and has played in 44 games. Kentish has 132 career points and 111 career rebounds. The Eagles will also honor team manager Mike Gibson. Gibson, a native of Andover, MA, has been with the program for four years.

Boston College vs. Virginia
Boston College and Virginia have met five times with the Cavaliers leading the series, 4-1. BC head coach Cathy Inglese is 1-3 vs. the Cavaliers. BC is 1-1 at home against Virginia. The first meeting between BC and Virginia took place at the Nike Christmas Classic hosted by the Eagles. BC lost in the first round to Virginia, 58-46, on Dec. 29, 1983. In the second game on Dec. 30, the Eagles defeated Notre Dame, 59-55. Last season, BC lost in overtime to Virginia, 65-64. The Eagles tied the game with nine seconds to play. Virginia opened the overtime period with a three-pointer by Sharnee Zoll, who finished with 16 points. The game-winner came from then-freshman Monica Wright, whose baseline jumper put the Eagles away. BC was led by Mickel Picco with 23 points, including four three-pointers and Kathrin Ress with 16.
Last Time Out
Despite 24 points and nine rebounds from freshman Stefanie Murphy, Boston College suffered a 71-65 loss to Florida State in Tallahassee, FL. The Eagles went up quick 13-7 on four points from both Murphy and Carolyn Swords (13 points, seven rebounds). FSU tied the game at 9:50 on a three-pointer by Courtney Ward. The halftime lead went to 11 when Tanea Davis-Cain hit a 3-pointer from the corner at the buzzer. BC chipped away and got within one at the 10 minute mark on a jumper by Corey Rusin. Ayla Brown tied the game at 51-51 at the eight minute mark in the second half. That is the closest BC would get. A five point run by FSU's Mara Freshour put the Eagles away with four minutes left to play.
Rising Rookies
Freshmen Carolyn Swords and Stefanie Murphy are the top rookie scoring tandem in the country. The two combine for 772 of the Eagles 1,719 total points scored this season. Murphy, who is averaging 15.7 points per game, is the fifth leading freshman scorer in the country, while Swords, who is averaging 13.5 points per game, is 16th among all freshmen. BC is the only team with two freshmen in the Top 20 freshmen scorers.
Free Throws
• Freshman Carolyn Swords is currently shooting 64.5 percent from the floor. She not only leads the ACC but also the country in field goal percentage (64.5). The BC women's basketball record is 58.7 % set by Kathrin Ress in the 2003-04 season.
• Freshman Jaclyn Thoman leads the Eagles with 93 assists. She is currently eighth in the ACC in assists and the top freshman in the category (3.56 apg).
• Senior Rebecca Miles is fourth on the team in assists with 54. Her career-high is four in a game, which she has reached six times.
• The Eagles are currently in the Top 15 in three categories in the NCAA Women's National Rankings. Boston College is ranked sixth in the nation in team assists per game (17.8), ninth in rebounding margin (+8.3) and 13th in FG% (46.5).
• Ayla Brown is 6-for-13 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the last two games. She also has 12 rebounds, three steals and 18 points.
