The Eagles earned the win against Duke when sophomore Brooke Knowlton headed in a ball from Amy Caldwell, which hit the crossbar at 13:14 in the game. Boston College controlled the tempo throughout the match and out-shot Duke, 12-10. Freshman goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni earned her eighth shutout, while Knowlton's goal was her fifth game-winning goal of the season.
BC vs. UNC
Boston College and North Carolina (17-1-2) have history that dates back to the early 1980's when current BC Director of Operations Mike LaVigne started the program at the Heights. In fact, LaVigne and current North Carolina coach Anson Dorrance are two of the original coaches from the inaugural women's soccer NCAA Tournament (1982). LaVigne returned to the Eagles program when current head coach Alison Kulik took over the program in 1997.
The two teams have played eight times, four times in the 1980's and four times since BC joined the ACC in 2005. The Tar Heels lead the series.
Boston College has only lost by a one goal margin in the last two matches. In 2007, Boston College held UNC scoreless in regulation at the Newton Soccer Field. In double-overtime, North Carolina squeaked out a win on a goal by Meghan Klingenberg at 105:40.
This past season at Chapel Hill, in one of the most highly competitive games of the season, Boston College fell, 3-2. The two teams were tied 0-0 at the half. BC opened the scoring when junior Gina DiMartino sent a perfect looping shot from outside the box into the back of the goal at 50:25. UNC went up 2-1 on two goals in a four minute span when Casey Nogueira and Alli Long struck. With a 2-1 lead and 20 minutes to play, the Eagles remained poised and tied the game at 2-2 at 75:29. Sophomore Hannah Cerrone received the ball from senior Caitlin Hiler off a corner kick attempt. Cerrone sent a deep ball to the back corner which sophomore Natalie Crutchfield one-timed by a diving Tar Heel keeper. As the momentum swayed, UNC scored the game-winner with six minutes to play in the match.
CORNER KICKS:
The Eagles have won five of the last six games and are currently on a four-game winning streak. In that run, BC has out-scored its opponent 7-3, and has taken more shots than its opponent (91-48). Freshman Julia Bouchelle has three goals, while junior Gina DiMartino has three assists in the last six games ... During the season, Boston College held opponents to just 14 goals, while finding the back of the goal 33 times this season ... BC averages 16.4 shots a game ... The Eagles are now ranked 10th in the NSCAA poll, and remained at No. 1 in the NSCAA Regional Ranking.
