Field Hockey Loses to Wake Forest in First Round

Durham, N.C. - The Boston College Field Hockey team lost to Wake Forest 4-3 at Duke University's Jack Katz Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
BC tallied the first goal of the game at 5:49. Midfielder Tara Fernandes gathered the ball on the right side and brought it up the middle, passing to junior Chelsey Feole at the top of the circle who fired a shot that beat Deacons goalkeeper Cyrstal Duffield.
Wake Forest fired back, netting their first goal at 7:20 in the first to even the score at one apiece.
The two teams battled through nine combined penalty corners in the first half with neither side gaining an advantage and the first half ended with the score tied at one.
The Eagles netted the go-ahead goal at on a pass from Feole to senior forward Bob Dirks. The goal, her 19th of the season, tied Dirks record for goals in a season from 2006.
BC's lead was tested when Wake Forest was awarded a penalty stroke at...goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz managed to deflect the ball with her stick to keep the score at 2-1 BC.
Wake Forest re-tied the game at 46:02 lifting the ball across the goal line from the right to left where Melissa Martin tipped it in to pull the two teams even again.
The Demon Deacons gained the lead for the first time in the game at 49:46 with Wake Forest's Kim Romansky netting her econd goal of the contest to pull ahead 3-2.
The Eagles netted the goal number three on a free hit outside the circle. Sophomore Janna Anctil netted her third goal of the season on a pass from Chelsey Feole to even the score 3-3.
Wake Forest pulled ahead for good at 64:25 with Michelle Kasold netting the game-winning goal at give the Deacons the 4-3 lead.
BC had 14 shots on net to Wake Forest's 16 and Berkowitz made seven saves in the loss.
