Chestnut Hill, MA - The Boston College women's basketball program signed three high school seniors to National Letters of Intent, head coach Sylvia Crawley announced on Monday.
The three members of the class of 2013 are Mary Nwachukwu from Dighton, Mass., Kelsey Reynolds from Granger, Indiana and Kerri Shields from Darby, Pennsylvania.
"The newest members of our Eagle family all have a couple of things in common. They all have a good work ethic, high basketball IQ's, and they are all good shooters,'' said Crawley. "It was a special moment for me when I received their letters as this his will be my first recruiting class here at Boston College.''
Nwachukwu, a 6-foot-2 forward, is a senior at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional. She averaged 30 points and 18 rebounds a game as a junior and was named to the Boston Globe Super Team and a Boston Herald All-Scholastic. An adidas Top 50 player, Nwachukwu is the second girl to score 1,000 points at D-R. She also led the state in scoring (30.0 ppg.).
"In the past, Boston College did an excellent job of keeping the best talent in the area at home. The tradition continued when we added Mary,'' said Crawley. "She is a perfect fit for our new up-tempo style of play. She is an agile forward who plays inside or outside. She will have an opportunity to play with two top notch post players in the ACC (Murphy and Swords - 2008 ACC All-Freshmen Team). They are going to pass the torch to Mary. We're excited because Mary brings a slightly different look than what we have in the post.''
Reynolds, a 5-foot-9 guard, attends Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana. She averaged 19 points, 5.3 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 2.7 steals. Reynolds, who notched her 1,000th career points on Nov. 15, was an ICGSA All-State second team selection and first-team All-Northern Indiana Conference honoree. She was also the co-MVP of the team.
"We are trying to make our team mentally tougher and thought by adding a mentally tough point guard it would set the tone for what we are trying to create,'' said Crawley of Reynolds. "Kelsey plays extremely hard for 40 minutes on both ends of the court. It is her work ethic which sets her apart from most players. Kelsey is very intelligent, as well as competitive. She possesses all the qualities we look for in a floor general.''
Shields, who attends Archbishop John Carroll High School in Radnor, PA, is a 5-foot-9 guard. A three-time All-Delaware County and All-Southeastern PA honoree, Shields was the first recruit to verbal to BC out of this class. She helped her high school team capture the 2007 Pennsylvania Catholic League Championship and advance to the finals in 2008. Shields' is also a member of the Philly Comets Club team.
"Kerri Shields was the first one to believe in our vision here at BC and committed early to assure she could be a part of it,'' said Crawley. " Kerri is an excellent shooter and we knew she would be a great addition to our team considering the good interior play we have.''
