Chapel Hill, N.C.--After Virginia jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, the Cavs hung on for a 15-7 win against the Eagles in the second quarterfinal of the ACC Women's Lacrosse Championships hosted by the University of North Carolina. Rookie Lauren Costello notched two goals and an assist in the second half to lead Boston College in scoring. The Eagles move to 5-10 on the season.
The Eagles got off to a slow start to begin the quarterfinal. The Cavaliers had scored seven unanswered goals before Boston College took their first shot at 5:40. Sophomore Jenna McCabe converted that first shot into the Eagles' first goal of the game.
UVa scored their eighth goal before the Eagles struck again at 2:22. McCabe dished a pass from the right wing to the center of the field right outside the crease from where junior Caitlin Swift hit the back of the net. With :39 remaining in the half, what was called an own goal by Virginia narrowed the Cavs' lead to 8-3. UVa defender Jessy Morgan attempted to gather a ground ball by flicking the ball up, but the floating ball made its way behind UVa goalie Kendall McBrearty. Boston College committed 19 fouls before halftime and turned the ball over 10 times to the Cavs' 4 turnovers.
Boston College continued their momentum and notched the first goal of the second half. Sophomore Maura Mahoney circled the net, brought the ball around front and beat UVa goalie Kendall McBrearty at 28:15. The Cavaliers responded with a couple of goals before freshman Peyton Killeen found the back of the net at 24:24 for a 10-5 score. Sophomore Margot Spatola began the clear when she passed up from the right side to Costello. Costello sent a quick dish to Killeen to earn the assist.
Virginia went on a five-goal run lasting over 20:00. Costello broke that run with a free position goal at 1:35. The freshman netted the final goal of the game, her 34th on the season, at 1:11 for the 15-7 final score.
Sophomore Katie Monaghan played all 60:00 for the Eagles in net. She made 14 saves, including 10 in the second half, and held the Cavaliers scoreless on seven free position shots.
Boston College will travel to Dartmouth on Wednesday, May 2 for a 6:00 p.m. contest. The Eagles finish the 2007 campaign by hosting Brown next Saturday, May 5 beginning at 1:00 p.m. -BC-
