Storrs, Conn.--Boston College field hockey took home the Northeast Mercian Cup title on Sunday after defeating Connecticut, 2-1, in the semifinals and Boston University in the championship game on penalty strokes at the University of Connecticut campus. The Eagles also won the tournament in the cup's 2003 Northeast debut.
The Huskies struck first in the semifinal just as the officials blew the whistle to end the first half. Sophomore Bob Dirks, the reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Year, notched the equalizer early in the second half on a penalty corner. Classmate Kathleen Murphy tallied the game-winning goals in the waning minutes of regulation when she knocked in a deflection off a penalty corner.
In the final against the defending cup champion Boston University, regulation ended in a 1-1 tie to send the game into penalty strokes. Freshman Chelsey Feole, Murphy, junior Caitlin Young and sophomore Katie Quaglia each hit their shots, while sophomore goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz held down the fort against the BU shooters. Berkowitz made a great stick save to stop one shot, and then forced another Terrier to shoot wide.
Feole hit the back of the net early in the game on a high one-time shot. The Terriers tied the match up with good movement and nice passing leading to a goal.
"Overall we are very pleased with our progress this spring," head coach Ainslee Lamb says. "We have had some challenges with injuries and illness that have forced us to mix and match line-ups every weekend. To work through that and finish the spring season with two good wins, we are happy with that. It sets a good tone for our summer training, and the start of the 2007 Fall Season."
