Virginia Tech took an eight point halftime lead and never looked back as the Hokies defeated Boston College, 67-52, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Conte Forum. Boston College is now 13-14 and 3-10 in the ACC, while Virginia Tech is now 17-13 and 6-8 in the ACC.
Virginia Tech had four players in double-figures and out-rebounded the Eagles, 47-28 for the game. Amber Scott led the Hokies with 12 points, while Brittany Cook added 11. Kirby Copeland and Nare Diawara each added 10 in the win.
The Eagles were led by freshman Ayla Brown with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Mickel Picco added 14 points. Senior Kathrin Ress added nine points and six rebounds in the loss.
Boston College opened up with an 8-2 lead to start the game. The Hokies took a 17-14 at the 8:23 mark on an 8-0 run. The Eagles tied the game at 25-25 with 3:11 to play in the half when Kaydia Kentish hit a lay-up. Virginia Tech finished the half with an 8-2 run behind four points from Nare Diawara and four from Amber Hall. The offensive spurt gave Virginia Tech a 35-27 lead at the half.
The Eagles shot 44 percent from the field including 2-for-2 from the arc while Virginia Tech went 16-for-30 (53 percent).
Boston College could not get any closer than eight points in the second half. At 12:34 in the half, Picco hit a jumper off a fast break and BC was down, 44-36. The Hokies proceeded to run off eight straight points and led, 52-36, and the Eagles never cut into the double-digit lead.
Offensively, the Eagles went cold in the second half shooting, 24 percent from the field and 32 for the game.
Boston College will host the reigning National Champion and No. 6 ranked Maryland on Sunday, February 25 at 3 p.m. It will be the final game at Conte Forum for the Eagles senior class - Kathrin Ress, Sarah Marshall and Kindyll Dorsey.
